Acquired by Dallas in a pre-draft trade in June, center Cody Eakin’s first month in the Stars organization has been a memorable one. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has led the team in goals, points and plus-minus and is tied for the AHL-lead with two shorthanded goals. Eakin assisted on Max Fortunus’ goal in San Antonio, Texas’ first goal of the season. He then followed it up with a masterful performance in the Stars’ home opener on October 14th as he scored twice, including a game-tying shorthanded goal late in the third period that setup Texas’ eventual 9-round shootout win over the first place Charlotte Checkers. Eakin produced another multi-point game on October 20th in a 5-3 home loss against Houston, had the primary assist on the game-winning goal on October 24th’s 3-1 win over Milwaukee and scored his team-best fourth goal of the season to close out the month at Oklahoma City last Sunday. He has seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) and a +5 rating in Texas’ first seven games of the season and is currently tied for 35th in the AHL in points.

Texas rookie goaltender Jack Campbell began his first full season in pro hockey with several impressive performances. His first start of the season on October 14th brought an incredible 4-3 nine-round shootout win over Charlotte, one of only two teams to take points off the Checkers so far this year. Campbell stopped 27 shots through regulation and overtime and then denied eight of nine shootout attempts, including four straight sudden death attempts where Charlotte could have won the game. The Port Huron, Michigan native’s second win was almost his first shutout of the season. Campbell held Milwaukee off the scoreboard until late in the third period on October 24th and still garnered him first star honors in a 3-1 win over the Admirals. Campbell also had two relief apperances, while backing up Cristopher Nilstorp; his 35+ minute relief effort last Sunday at Oklahoma City steadied the ship and kept Texas within striking distance in a 4-2 loss to the Barons.

Rookie defenseman Jamie Oleksiak has made a big impression in his first month in professional hockey. At 6-foot-7, 254 lbs, the Toronto, Ontario native is already the tallest player on the Stars’ roster and one of the biggest players in the AHL. However, his play on the ice does not merely surround his height. Oleksiak took just two games to record his first pro point, assisting on Cody Eakin’s game-tying shorthanded goal on October 14th vs. Charlotte. He then notched another assist on October 19th at Houston for his first pro point streak. His biggest highlight of October came on the 24th against the Milwaukee Admirals when he scored his first pro goal midway through the third period. Not only was it a personal milestone, but it also turned out to be the game-winning goal in Texas’ 3-1 win and Oleksiak was named the game’s second star. Through seven games this season he ranks third on the team with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and has two penalty minutes.
