Stars Travel to Peoria Sunday for a 6:00 PM Game

Cedar Park, TX – The Texas Stars (27-13-3-4, 61 points) defeated the Abbotsford Heat (21-21-4-3, 49 points) 4-2 Saturday night in front of 6,200 fans at Cedar Park Center. Stars wingers Francis Wathier and Scott McCulloch scored 38-seconds apart midway through the third period to lift Texas to its sixth straight home victory. Center Greg Rallo registered two points, with a goal and an assist as Texas gained a point for the seventh straight game. Stars goalie Matt Climie (13-13-3) stopped 34 shots in the victory, tying Texas for first place in the West Division with Rockford. The team travels to Peoria for a game against the Rivermen on Sunday at 6:00 PM.

Texas scored the lone goal of the first period at 13:32. Center Travis Morin picked up a turnover in front of the Abbotsford net and slid the puck over to center Greg Rallo for a shot past Heat goalie Matt Keetley. Rallo leads the team with 15 goals this season.

In the second period, Stars defenseman Maxime Fortunus fired a shot from the right point, beating Keetley for the 2-0 Texas lead. Center Aaron Gagnon assisted the defenseman’s ninth goal of the year which came at 5:42. Abbotsford cut the Texas lead in half at 17:05 when winger Cam Cunning beat Stars goalie Matt Climie on the gloveside with a shot from the left-wing circle. The Heat tied the game 2-2 with a shorthanded goal at 19:13 of the middle period. Right wing David Van der Gulik found a rebound in front of the net and shot the puck past Climie. Center Brett Sutter picked up the assist on Van der Gulik’s eighth goal of the year.

Texas broke the tie by scoring a pair of goals just 38 seconds apart in the third period. On the Stars’ third power play of the night, winger Francis Wathier tipped a shot from Ivan Vishnevkiy at 10:59 for the 3-2 Texas lead. Rallo also assisted Wathier’s 11th goal of the season. At 11:37, left wing Scott McCulloch scored a goal, extending the Stars lead to 4-2. McCulloch brought the puck up the right-wing side and beat Keetley with a shot over his shoulder. Defenseman Dan Jancevski tallied an assist on McCulloch’s third goal of the year.

The Texas Stars head to Peoria on Sunday to take on the Rivermen at 6:00 PM. On Tuesday, February 2nd, the team travels to Milwaukee for a game against the Admirals at 7:00 PM. The Stars return to Cedar Park Center for back-to-back games against the Peoria on Friday, February 5th at 7:30 PM and on Saturday, February 6th, at 7:00 PM. On Friday, the first 3,000 fans receive a Texas Stars license plate cover. On Friday, Cedar Park Center will sell $2.00 domestic drafts and $1.00 hot dogs. During Saturday’s game, the first 3,000 fans will receive Texas Stars pennants. Fans may purchase the State Farm Family four-pack (four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs for $44).
