Stars Now Wait Western Conference Semifinal Opponent

CEDAR PARK, TX – Alex Chiasson scored his second straight game-winning goal and Cristopher Nilstorp made 34 saves to backstop the Texas Stars to a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at Cedar Park Center in Game 4 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Texas wins the series three-games to one and moves on to the Western Conference Semifinals against an opponent still to be determined.

The Stars had only one lineup change for Game 4 as Brett Sonne made his 2013 Calder Cup Playoff debut, replacing injured center Travis Morin. Milwaukee made multiple two changes, bringing in Scott Valentine and Joonas Rask and scratching Zach Budish and Cam Reid.  The Stars took the lead midway through the opening period as their leading goal scorer found the net for the second time in the post-season. Colton Sceviour’s centering feed from behind the goal line eluded two Admirals defenders and found Matt Fraser for a one-timer through the pads of goaltender Magnus Hellberg and into the net at 10:16. Sceviour and Sonne both assisted on Fraser’s goal, which was Sonne’s first career pro playoff point. Five minutes later the Stars got the first power play of the night and nearly conceded a shorthanded goal. Texas goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp made an immense save on Scott Valentine’s shorthanded breakaway to keep the 1-0 lead.

Just 89 seconds into the second period rookie Alex Chiasson scored his second goal in as many playoff games to put Texas ahead 2-0. Chiasson tipped in a Kevin Connauton shot from the blue line as the puck angled just inside the far right post. Connauton and Mike Hedden both registered assists on the goal.

Milwaukee got on the board early in the third period when Kevin Henderson pounced on a rebound from a Taylor Beck shot and fired home at 1:40. Henderson’s goal, assist by Beck and Victor Bartley, snapped Nilstorp’s franchise record post-season shutout streak at 128:39, which spanned all the way back to the second period of Game 2. The Admirals bombarded Nilstorp in the third period, out-shooting the Stars 18-8, trying to keep their playoff lives going for at least one more game. However, the Texas goaltender would not be beaten again and he held on to a 2-1 victory to clinch the series.

Texas netminder Cristopher Nilstorp finished with 34 saves on 35 shots to record his third victory of the playoffs and improve his AHL-leading save percentage to 0.963. Magnus Hellberg took the loss, stopping 24-of-26 shots in goal for Milwaukee. The Admirals out-shot the Stars 35-26 and both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play. Texas must wait until Saturday’s Western Conference Quarterfinal games conclude before finding out the team’s opponent will be in the second round. Teams are reseeded in the Conference Semifinals, so the Stars could potentially face Houston, Charlotte or Oklahoma City.
