Although Jordie Benn does not qualify for the Original Stars group, since he did not play for the team during the 2009-10 season, he is the only player in franchise history to wear the No. 8 sweater.
The Victoria, British Columbia native was undrafted after playing four years of junior hockey for his hometown team in the BCHL. He stayed local when he turned pro for the 2008-09 season, joining the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings. Benn then moved to the Lone Star state, but not yet with the Dallas Stars organization, instead signing with the CHL’s Allen Americans. He had a solid year and an even better postseason as Allen reached the CHL Finals before losing to the Rapid City Rush in six games.
Benn joined the Texas Stars for the 2010-11 season and became the first player to don the No. 8 jersey when he made his AHL debut on October 27, 2010 at Rockford. After his first year with Texas, Benn earned his first NHL contract when he signed a one-year, two-way deal with Dallas on July 2, 2011. He would make his NHL debut on January 3, 2012 vs. Detroit and tallied an assist, becoming the 10th player in Stars history to record his first NHL point in his debut. Even more special was the fact that he played along side his younger brother Jamie Benn and both brothers had assists on Loui Eriksson’s goal.
To date Jordie Benn has 65 points (18 goals, 47 assists) and 105 penalty minutes in 165 career games for Texas and has played in 29 NHL games for Dallas, with eight points (1 goal, 7 assists) and 10 penalty minutes. Benn ranks seventh on Texas’ all-time list in games played and shots (306), while being tied for seventh in power play goals (11). He is ninth all-time in assists and power play assists (20) and 10th in points.
