Texas Takes 2-1 Lead in Best-of-Five Western Conference Quarterfinals
CEDAR PARK, TX – Cristopher Nilstorp made 21 saves for his first career Calder Cup Playoff shutout and rookie Alex Chiasson scored the game-winner in the third period as the Texas Stars beat the Milwaukee Admirals 2-0 Wednesday night at Cedar Park Center in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Texas now leads the series 2-1 and will have a chance to eliminate Milwaukee in Game 4 on Friday, May 3rd.
The Stars came out buzzing in the first period and took it to the Admirals, out-shooting them 15-6. Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg had to be sharp to thwart the Texas attack and did so in the opening frame.
Things turned even more defensive in the second period as the two clubs combined for just 11 shots on goal (7-4 Milwaukee) and remained scoreless into the third period.
Rookie Alex Chiasson, making his pro playoff debut, broke the deadlock at 7:42 of the third period, tipping a centering feed from Justin Dowling past the glove of Hellberg for a 1-0 Stars lead. Defenseman Kevin Connauton secured an all-important insurance goal at 13:57 as he blasted home a one-timer from the point for a power play goal and a 2-0 lead. Joe Morrow and Reilly Smith both assisted on the goal and it was Smith’s first career pro playoff game. With two minutes left in regulation the Admirals pulled Hellberg for a sixth attacker, but could not get anything by Stars goalie Cristopher Nilstorp, who out-played his Swedish counterpart.
Texas goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp stopped all 21 shots he faced to record his first career Calder Cup playoff shutout. Milwaukee goalie Magnus Hellberg finished with 29 saves on 31 shots and took the loss. The Stars out-shot the Admirals 31-21 in the game and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while holding Milwaukee’s man-advantage to a 0-for-2 night.
