Texas Has Pucks and Paws Night Spoiled By Lake Erie

CEDAR PARK, TX – Lake Erie goaltender Calvin Pickard stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Monsters blanked the Texas Stars 4-0 Saturday night at Cedar Park Center.

After battling through a goalless first period, the Monsters opened the scoring early in the second. Mark Sgarbossa took a centering feed from Patrick Bordeleau and slid the puck underneath the pads of Texas goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp at 2:34 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. 94 seconds later Bill Thomas raced in down the right wing and snapped a wrist shot under the blocker of Nilstorp to double Lake Erie’s advantage. The Monsters made it 3-0 on the power play when Brad Malone snapped a blazing wrister from the right faceoff circle off the underside of the crossbar and into the top left corner of the net at 11:10.

Jack Campbell replaced Nilstorp in goal for the Stars to begin the third period, but once again the Monsters struck quickly to stave off any chance for a comeback. Andrew Agozzino found Bryan Lerg unmarked on the back post and Lerg shot composure to make a fake on Campbell before deposited the puck over the fallen goaltender a mere 1:20 into the third period. The Stars out-shot the Monsters 12-10 in the third period, but could not beat Pickard.

Lake Erie starter Calvin Pickard got the win, stopping all 25 shots he faced to record his second consecutive shutout. Texas starting goalie Cristopher Nilstorp took the loss while making 10 saves on 13 shots over the first 40 minutes of play. Jack Campbell blocked 9-of-10 shots in his 20 minutes of relief. The Stars out-shot the Monsters 25-23 and went 0-for-2 on the power play; Lake Erie was 1-for-1 with the man advantage.

Tonight was Pucks and Paws night, where the official announced canine attendance was 82.
